About capoeira

More than a martial art

Capoeira is a cultural, sporting and artistic tradition all at once. It blends Afro-Brazilian music, dance, storytelling, theatre and self-defence.

History

Born from resistance

The cultural and oral tradition of capoeira grew out of the African people's will to resist transportation from Africa and to survive enslavement in Brazil.

From its beginnings, capoeira practice has been about strengthening the body and spirit of those who practise it, and connecting them to their community.

Inclusion, patience, empathy and tolerance sit at the heart of every class.

How we train

Every part of capoeira

Students take part in everything, from playing the instruments to practising the movements.

01

Movement

Mestre Goioerê has developed a range of sequences, from beginner to advanced. They guide students through the movements and steadily build coordination, fitness, flexibility and confidence.

02

Music

Capoeira is played to live music that sets the time and tempo. Simple songs in Portuguese help beginners relax, open up and pick up some of the language.

03

Instruments

Drums, tambourines and the berimbau, the one-stringed bow that leads the roda and carries a rich history and tradition in Brazilian culture.

04

Maculelê

A dance performed to the beat of the drums and the clash of sticks. It tells the story of Maculelê, a great warrior who died defending his village. All ages and fitness levels can take part.

05

The roda

Capoeira shines when you play it with others. The music, fitness and fun bring everyone together into a community and support network.

06

Fun

At its heart, capoeira is about fun. Our high-energy sessions leave students laughing and wanting more.
